FOOD WASTE   our local authority has given us the ability to recycle our food waste.  Apparently, LESS than half of us our using our Silver caddies for this purpose.

BLACK BIN – this is NOT for food waste.  The black bin goes to LANDFIL food decomposing  produces harmful methane gas which is highly flammable and dangerous.  It is also a potent greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming.

 

LETS ALL AGREE TO USE OUR SILVER BINS collected every week.  The contents are converted to biogas which is processed into a rich organic fertiliser and returned to farmland to produce future crops.

  1. Over 1/3 of all food produced globally goes to waste.
  2. The annual value of food wasted globally is $1 trillion, and weights 1.3 million tonnes
  3. One million hungry people could be fed on less than a quarter of the food wasted in the US, UK and Europe.
  4. An area larger than China is used to grow food that is never eaten.
  5. 25% of the worlds water supply is used to grow food that is never eaten.
  6. If food waste were a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases (after China and the USA).
  7. In most developed countries, over half of all food waste takes place in the home.
  8. Meanwhile, food waste at the retail store is less than 2% therefore it is up to us to choose wisely rejecting the offers to buy more.
  9. In the home food waste is worth £800 on average in the UK

FOOD WASTE CAN BE REDUCED

Tips     1.  Try not to overbuy

  1. Carefully check the use-buy dates (remember they are just a guide)

  2. Plan ahead. Think what you are going to cook – freeze leftovers.

  3. BBC good food give plenty of advice.

  4. Bread seems to be one of the most wasted item.  A large loaf can be halved and the rest frozen for use later.

All this can save you money and help save the planet.
